DIY Exploding Cards

Hi friends! Today’s video shares two ways to create exploding cards that are sure to surprise your recipient. You can create these cards easily with symmetrical dies or just a piece of folded cardstock. This post is also part of the 2nd anniversary Studio Katia blog hop. Be sure to read to the end of the post for more information!

For the first card, I stenciled a background using the Brushstroke Waves stencil and Distress Oxide inks. Moving the stencil around to add more layers can be a fun way to create a unique look! I added a colored stingray on the front as the focal image from the Under The Sea stamp set.

Be sure to check out the video for an in-depth look at how I created the exploding insert for the card (there are lots of folds, but it is worth it)! The exploding panel makes it easy to add a sentiment and lots of images to detail the inside of the card.

For the second example, I created an inked background with the Bubbles stencil. By rotating this stencil, you are able to build up different colored layers and create a really stunning background! I finished the front of with some adorable turtles from the Shell- ebration stamp set.

To create the exploding panel, I used the Scallop Window die and accordion folded it to create the 3d effect (again, be sure to check the video for more details)! You can try this fun technique with lots of symmetrical dies to create a similar effect.

I did lots of fun coloring for all the adorable new critter images from Studio Katia and didn’t include it in the video for time purposes. However, I did a live stream sharing my coloring in real time with lots of tips and techniques to color with Copic Markers and Colored Pencils.
