Hey there! Today I am excited to show you how to use alcohol inks to create fun, random, and colorful background on your card designs (today we are creating a Christmas card). These are a product that got me started on cardmaking because they give such amazing results on cards that you will never be able to achieve twice.
The inks work best on plastic or a coated cardstock because they have more time to move around and create the fun designs that they are known for. They also dry very quickly because they have an alcohol base, however they can be reactivated or taken over with different colors.
I started off using a plastic surface and felt applicator to apply my color to the surface. The ink replaces the color the more you dab the tool, so if you like the effect be sure to stop!
I decided that the effect got a little too blended, so I decided to just shake the bottle drops onto the surface. This way the colors didn’t blend all together and gives an awesome watercolor/ink effect. 🙂
I clipped the plastic onto a piece of cardstock using a Tim Holtz clip to hold it in place without using any adhesive. Then, I started on the die cutting scene using the Holy Night dies from Concord & 9th. I love this scene because it is so versatile and tells the amazing true story of Christmas!
Finally, I added everything onto a card base and used a bit of foam tape to add dimension in between layers.

This video has inspired me to pull out my alcohol inks and look to see if I have coated paper so I can try this technique. I am happy to see that you made a card representing the TRUE Reason for the Season! Thanks for the inspiration……….the card is wonderful!
Great video! I love alcohol inks! I especially like using Yupo paper. The back side of glossy photo paper acts a lot like Yupo in how the inks spread around and is a lot cheaper. I like using a straw or canned air to push the ink around, too. There are so many ways to play and get some fabulous backgrounds with these ink… it can be quite addictive. Thank you for additional inspiration, Simon!
Love alcohol inks, they give such random fun patterns and blending. Great card! Thanks for sharing it.
