Hi there! In today’s video, I am excited to share 5 of my favorite stamping techniques to add some extra pizzaz to all of your handmade stamped cards. These techniques can be modified and used over and over in many card projects.

SHADOW STAMPING
This technique provides a brightly colored shadow behind a light stamped image on cards. I love using this technique with floral images for an elegant look!
Start off by stamping the image in white pigment ink onto dark gray or kraft cardstock. Then, ink up the image again with dye ink and offset the image a tiny bit before stamping down. some of the dye ink sits on top of the pigment ink to create a light color and some sinks into the cardstock to create a dark-colored shadow. Every ink color creates a different effect with this technique, so have fun trying it out with your inks!
SWIPE STAMPING
This fun technique creates an amazing stamped texture in solid images. It gives solid stamping a little extra pizzaz and gives a whole new look to a stamped background.
With hybrid or dye inks, start putting the ink onto the stamp like normal. Then, swipe your inkpad across the stamp to get a texture and stamp it down. It’s a super simple technique, but have fun playing around with colors, stamps, and textures that you can add to the solid images!
STAMP LAYERING
This is a classic technique that I LOVE which gives a 3D looking image on cards. One company that has really done an amazing job creating these layering stamp sets is Altenew, but there is a HUGE variety of layering stamps on the market!
When layering images, start with the largest image and lightest color ink. Then, continue stamping the layers on top using a darker ink as you move to the smallest image. When lining up the stamps, be sure to look above to get a good alignment… it will never be perfect, but it’s handmade! 🙂
To finish off the card, I used a coordinating die and partially cut one of each butterfly’s wing. When adding it to a card base, I put foam tape under the wings to add some dimension!
OMBRE STAMPING
When stamping, this technique creates great shading on stamped images and is a good way to use colored inkpads. You can get some awesome and realistic stamped effects with this technique on some images!
To start, ink up your stamp with a light colored inkpad like usual. Then, take a darker color and roll a bit onto the edge of the stamp (you could invest in ombre inkpads for a similar result). This is a super fun and easy technique and you can even mix colors from different color families. If you don’t have a bunch of inkpads, you could stamp the image in the MISTI and roll on the same color in layers.
TONE-ON-TONE STAMPING
This technique creates a clean and simple look on cards and doesn’t take much effort. I like to use this technique with sentiments to make them subtle on cards!
To achieve this technique, ink your stamp with a color that is a little darker than the cardstock and stamp it down. This technique is SUPER simple, but it creates an awesome subtle effect with stamping.
To finish off the card, I stamped a large “you” sentiment and added the sentiments next to it on colorful strips of cardstock. All of the little sentiments can be completed with the larger word to create a larger message!

My most favorite stamping is watercolor stamping. It makes the look of watercolored images that look as if I did it.Great video Simon.
All of your cards are wonderful………….and you did a great job with the video and explaining just what you were doing. I am just a pretty straight forward stamper………..nothing fancy, but I REALLY like the swiping technique that you showed. Are you able to do that with any kind of ink?
Simon! These are fabulous. What a fun video. Thanks so much for sharing!
Another fantastic video. I really love that shadow stamping technique. I don’t usually use a lot of different techniques with the stamping itself, but I do love to use different watercoloring techniques to color them. Thanks for this great video, I will be trying a couple of these.
I just came across your video and really like the shadow stamping technique. Thanks for the inspiration!
Great video, Simon! Excellent presentation and clear instructions. Thank you for the shadow technique.
