Hi friends! Today I am excited to share some fun and easy ways to add stitching on cards to create beautiful detail and texture. This has been a huge trend lately and Altenew has released some incredible products that make stitching on projects even easier! Now I have to admit, this process is quite time-consuming. However, if you are watching TV, sitting in an airport, or have a bit of extra time… stitching on cards is lots of fun and a great way to pass time. 🙂

This was my first time stitching and with that came many mistakes that I learned from which I will be sure to share throughout the post. Also, I will share some examples that I didn’t quite have time to complete. I fell in love with stitching on my cards and will be sure to share any future projects on Instagram (because the process is hard to film)!
For the stitching, I use 6 strand embroidery floss and pearl cotton 5 floss. The 6 strand embroidery floss can be pulled apart and used on smaller projects and the pearl cotton 5 floss can’t be separated, but is great for larger stitching projects and has a nice texture and appearance.
For the first three cards, I used the Pegboard Canvas cover plate die to stitch patterns, designs, and backgrounds. The possibilities with this die are endless… I will definitely be creating some stitched backgrounds in the future!
On the first example, I cross-stitched a simple flower and pot with embroidery floss. You can create your own patterns by coloring little boxes where you want each stitch. Here I cut down the cardstock to make the cross stitched layer a bit smaller.
For the second card, I followed this pattern to cross stitch a more intricate tulip with embroidery thread. There are so many awesome free patterns to follow online! To finish it off, I cut around the stitching and adhered it to a card base.
On the third card, I followed this pattern and stitched a flower using pearl cotton 5 floss. I adhered the stitching behind a framed panel to add some interest and create a more finished look.
Here is my started attempt at stitching a full background… I still have quite a bit to stitch, but I love how it’s turning out!
For the next example, I stamped images from the Cross Stitch Flower stamp set using Altenew inks to create a beautiful faux stitched look. This is a great way to get a similar look to cross stitching without all the time!
You could also use the Cross Stitch Flower die set to add a bit of stitching to your projects. For this card, I added some cross stitch detail on the darkest colors using a small needle and 2 strands of the 6 strand embroidery floss.
I attempted to create a full stitched flower, but couldn’t get it finished before this video! 🙂
On the last card, I stamped the beautiful bundle of roses from the Sweet Rose Bouquet stamp set. I added a bit of straight stitching along the darkest details on the image to add a bit of texture with 2 strands of the 6 strand embroidery floss! This stitching was a bit less time consuming but I still love the texture and effect.

Wonderful job with the stitching. When I was young and had really good eyes, I too did a lot of cross-stitching and really enjoyed it. Now it is a joy to see someone else doing this and on cards. They are lovely.
Bravo for attempting the cross-stitching. I don’t think I have the patience for anything like that. I always enjoy your creativity and enthusiasm, though. Well done!
Really clever cards, not much into stitching these days but almost make me want to give it another try.

Terrific cards! The stitching gives such a different look and I think it’s fun to try new things.
Simon! Fabulous job!! I loved your stitched flowers… all of them. Really good video explaining how and what supplies needed.
Fabulous cards!! Love this new release. I like stitching on cards but don’t do a lot of it myself. My favorite card you created is the pink stitched card you didn’t quite finish fro this post. The shading is so gorgeous.
Great tutorial on thread types and stitching techniques. The cards are lovely with the added detail. Thank you for sharing
Beautiful cards! Love this release. Can do so much with them. I love the mandala die, peg board die and the cross stitch die and stamp! ♥ Thanks for the inspiration. ♥
love your stitching….
Like the last one best. The yellow flowers. I have not sewn anything in a very long time.
I’ve been following you on YouTube for quite some time and I’m glad you are finally getting some much deserved attention! The canvas cover-up is going to be so much fun to play with since I also like to cross stitch. Your cards are lovely.
Beautiful cards! I personally don’t like to stitch on cards, but am liking the look. My favorite….definitely the yellow roses. What a gorgeous color ♥
Great cards, Simon!
Awesome! I love the cross stitch ones too!
WONDERFUL cards Simon!
LOVE your stitching, colours and designs! I have a TIE for my favourite card today, I can’t choose between “I adore you” and “to you, from me, with love” … it would be such a pleasure to create and share cards just like them. It has been quite a while since I stitched on cards and then it was basic piercing to make stitched snowflakes, think I could be tempted to open my basket of embroidery floss and get stitching again with these amazing dies!
Thank You for sharing and INSPIRING 🙂
PS – I had two favourites from this release (the Cross Stitch Canvas Die & the Dearest Friend stamp set) but have to confess that the more I hop along, the longer my wish list grows
I love all of the new ideas!
Amazing stitching!
wONDERFUL CARDS, THE SWEET ROSE BOUQUET IS DRAWING ME IN!
How beautiful cards!! I really love this new Altenew release. I usually don’t do a lot of stitching on my cards but I have seen many lovely stitching cards for this blog hop and got inspired! My favorite card that you created is the one with the Sweet Rose Bouquet stamp set, I really love it.
Well done Simon, they are all so beautiful. I have been cross stitching for years and I love the idea of implementing this into my card making. I have thought about it many times but have yet to try it. After seeing your last card, I especially like the idea of only doing it in certain areas just to highlight them. My best friend cross stitches quilt blocks but doesn’t make cards so I would like to make a set of gift cards for her using this method you’ve shown. Thanks so much for sharing your lovely cards and ideas.
Super sweet cards!! Very fun cross stitching indeed!
I rarely stitch on my cards and, when I do, it’s usually machine stitching. I love your yellow rose card—so delicate.
The mega succulent and Wildflower Garden set are my favorites in this release.
Very pretty cards. Love the stitching. Thanks so much for sharing…
Great cards, I think my favorite might be the flower in the pot but they are all equally nice. I have not tried stitching on cards but have done stitchery on fabric. It looks like it would be fun to stitch on cards and would make a good carry along project. I really like your videos. Thanks for the tutorial.
I haven’t tried stitching on cards but love number 4 of your beautiful cards!
Great cards and I love your stitching! It looks so pretty and fun. Beautiful colors!
Great job stitching. What a beautiful release
Love the Cross stich and the stamped, GJ!!! TFS
I never did cross stitching on cards but after seeing your video, I might give it a try! Beautiful cards! Thank you for sharing! Take care!
Great cards stitching…wow
So pretty! Love the stitching! Have not tried it yet but I love the effect!
Such cool cards, Simon. I”m really impressed with your stitching skills – I know it takes a lot of time but what an amazing gift for the recipient of your card. Great designs are well that let the stitched floral just take center stage as the focal point. There is something so timeless about a yellow rose and your card is just pure elegance. Beautiful work today. Thanks for participating on the blog hop today.
Great cards! I’m impressed that you learned to do stitching on your own! It’s one of those skills that’s kind of gotten lost over the years. I enjoy cross stitching, so I’m excited about adding it to my cards. Love Altenew’s cross stitching stamps! Thanks for the tutorial and I look forward to more of your projects!
Perfect creation for this release, they are pretty & sweet, I love stitching on projects and my favorite of your is the ones that uses the Cross stitch Flower set!
Great cards ! Thank you for sharing 💕
Awesome projects, Simon! I’m glad to see stitching come back in style. So neat that you taught yourself & the results are wonderful! Can’t wait to try some of your ideas.
This stitching craze is getting to me. Thanks for making this tutorial
I love stitching on cards and think its a very personal way to make a card special. I really like the single pink bloom card the best.
I haven’t stitched on any cards yet, but love the effect. I used to cross stitch quite a bit and this would be a nice way to incorporate those skills in my card making. My favorite card is the Altenew cross stitch flower that you partially stitched. Very nice!
Amazing projects!!
Awesome cards! What a fun way to add some texture to a card!
Simon, these are awesome cards!
Love stitching on cards and these new products make it so easy! Great set of cards!
Wonderful cards! I love the texture the stitching adds.
These cards are amazing, Simon! I haven’t cross stitched in years, but you make me want to try it again! The fingers are much older, but your tips on stitching just a few areas is doable for me! Thanks for your wonderful inspiration!
Great cards! I just love the cross stitch canvas die, there’s so much you can do with it. Thanks for the inspiration.
I just love the new products Altenew is releasing. These cover plates are the bomb this release!
great release. so in love with the rose cards. thanks as always for sharing.
Your stitched cards are wonderful!
Love your cards. Great job on the stitching.
Love your cross stitching and that you were so creative with these new dies and stamps! Great cross stitching and it looks so good!! I actually love that the flower is only partially done! I think that might look kinda fun and adventuresome! Really adds so much dimension with the threads!
Hi Simon, your cross stitch cards are simple but stunning.
These stamps and dies are fantastic!! My first love was cross stitching and now I can combine it with my love for cardmaking. Awesome cards Simon!!
I agree with you totally these stamps and dies from Altenew are fab to encourage people to start stitching on cards or if not 100% confident add a little stitching with the faux stitching added on. I love to cross stitch and am impressed with all these products and that you not only had a small go that you really ran with it and made excellent cards. Will be waiting to see more of your work.
Beautiful creations!!
The stitching is lovely however, I’m partial to that Sweet Rose Bouquet stamp set. It is so pretty.
What a great release! I am loving all the cross stitch elements – I have been a cross-stitcher for many years, so it would be fun to combine both art forms! I am coveting the cross stitch and pegboard background dies – so versatile1 Great job on all your cards!
Your cross stitch cards are really beautiful, Simon! Thank you for making a video showing how you made your cards. I love watching how a designer makes their cards…it’s so inspiring!
What lovely cross-stitch cards! It has been a long time since I have done any cross-stitch but it is still a wonderful look and shows the recipient how much you care to put so much effort into the card!
SImon what an amazing collection of cards for this release!! I love the cross stitch look!!
Such pretty cards!! I love them all, but my favorite is the third card!! So pretty. I do like to add stitching to my cards, but I don’t do it quite often. I used stitching on my first card, though 🙂
Congratulations on such fun cards and attempting cross stitching. You are a very talented young man. I wish you the best as you refine your talents!
Very lovely cards. I love stitching, especially cross stitching. It was the first craft I learnt as a child and holds a special place in my heart.
I really like your work! thanks for sharing!!
Fantastic cards. Thanks for sharing your stitching tips. I like stitching on cards but I don’t do it often as it is too time consuming especially when you are piercing your own holes. I like your partially stitched cross stitch flower best
These cards are perfect with the stitching touch….great tutorial too!!
Love the stitching detail that you added on the stamped image. Thank you for the inspiration.
I love to cross stitch as well! Your cards are great, Pinterest has the best patterns out there!!
Nice beautiful cards with lovely techniques…Thanks for sharing!!
Lovely cross stitched cards. I really enjoyed your video and the tips but I think I’ll stick to the faux cross stitch as my eyes don’t like to focus on small details as well as they used to! Thanks for sharing. So glad you were part of the hop Simon!
Great job for stitching the first time! Thanks for sharing.
Very cool cards! Thank you for putting the video together!
Lovely cards Simon! My favorite is the one with the blue/purple flower. I like to cross stitch but have not tried it on cards yet, you did a great job!
Beautiful cards. I used to cross-stitch, but as I’ve aged it’s become too hard on my eyes. I’m thrilled to have a stamp set that creates the cross-stitch look without the crossed eyes it leaves me with.
Your cards look very nice. You have more patience than I for all that stitching (I used to cross stitch but it was so time consuming). Wonderful job!
AMAZING Inspiration!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE all of the Ideas!!
Such SWEET New Products too!!
THANKS SO MUCH for sharing and have a FABULOUS WEEK!!
Very impressive Simon. Totally awesome cards
Stunning you’ve done a great job. Thanks for the time you took to do an excellent video too. Also im glad you’re in the blog hop as I’ve now been exposed to your blog and that looks great to. I’m now a new email subscriber. Whoop whoop 😄 xx
Fabulous cards! I love the yellows!
Wonderful designs Simon!, I do stitching on my cards from time to time, all of these cards are pretty, but I must say the 5th one is my fave , love the butterfly and sentiment too, Thanks for the inspiration!
These are so pretty! Fabulous stitching!
Your cards are all beautiful. But I love the idea of adding a bit of texture with stitching as seen on the yellow roses.
Great video! I really like all your stitching cards but, if I have to choose, the miss you my friend and I adore you cards are my favorites followed by the yellow roses. Thanks for the inspiration and all the great tips!
Love your cross stitching element. Thanks for inspiring me with your beautiful projects. TFS
Love your cards! I’m so glad someone did actual cross stitching using those cover dies! You did a beautiful job too for it being your first time!
Super sweet stitched cards – I love the new cross stitched designs!
Beautiful cards..loved your stitching…
I love stitching on cards! When Jennifer Maguire first put up her video last July, I was like “Why didn’t I think of this before???” I’m so excited that companies like Altenew are coming out with detailed patterns like the flowers, though you’re right; there’s a ton of patterns to find online. I think my favorite card of yours is the one you didn’t finish; I really like where you’re going with it. I love how embroidery floss can really expand your ink colors much cheaper than actually expanding your ink colors! Thanks for sharing these great cards with us.
Hello.. Dropping by to know if the winner of this giveaway was announced.. 🙂
Yes, I was also trying to find where the winner was posted and found not find anything.
